In addition to his duties as Assistant Director of the world-renown Agape International Choir and the Agape Music and Arts Ministry, Tim McAfee Lewis is a singer/songwriter who innovatively fuses the foot-stomping, heart-shouting energy and rhythms of traditional gospel music with soul-liberating lyrics that contain empowering spiritual messages from the New Thought Movement to create a highly original music that speaks to listeners from all spiritual and religious traditions. Mr. McAfee Lewis calls his music “New Thought Gospel.”
Mr. McAfee Lewis has recorded for Island Records, Sony BMI, Capitol Records and Geffen Records, and appears on the Grammy-nominated song, “All These Things That I Have Done” by the English rock band, The Killers. (The song was featured in Nike’s 2008 Olympics commercials and has appeared in several movie soundtracks.) Mr. McAfee Lewis will also be featured on the title track of the soundtrack of the upcoming remake of the film “Footloose,” scheduled for release in October 2011 by Warner Bros. Studios.
Mr.
McAfee Lewis’ original compositions, “A New Understanding” and “Yes, I
Can” are performed regularly by the Agape International Choir. “Yes
I Can” was performed by the choir during their appearance at the Big
Tent at the Democratic National Convention in Denver in 2008. Tim
served as ensemble director when several of the members of the Agape
International Choir were chosen to appear at Invesco Stadium with
Will.I.Am and John Legend when they performed their song, “Yes We Can!”
the final night of the DNC. (The night Barrack Obama delivered his historic acceptance speech.) With
Trevor Horn, he conducted the choir’s Capitol Records recording session
with John Legend for the hit song, “If You’re Out There,” which became
an unofficial anthem of the Obama campaign. McAfee Lewis
directed the Agape Choir when they performed the song with Mr. Legend at
Pepsi Center on the opening night of the DNC. Mr.
McAfee Lewis is a talented arranger who has contributed original and
electrifying arrangements for traditional gospel songs such as “Walk in
the Light,” “Stepped in the Water,” and “Blessing Me” to the Agape
International Choir. He also provided the choir a new arrangement for the Broadway musical hit, ‘The Color Purple.”
A highly gifted performer with a magnetic stage presence, Mr. McAfee Lewis is a featured soloist at all Agape Choir concerts, and his rousing renditions of both his original compositions and traditional gospel songs are always a crowd favorite. He electrified an audience of over 20,000 during the Santa Monica Pier’s “Twilight Dance Series” in 2007 when he performed his hit “New Understanding” for the choir’s finale. (The choir opened for the hip-hop legends, Arrested Development.
Mr. McAfee Lewis’ humanitarian efforts are cherished by Southern California HIV/AIDS organizations. He has given his time, talent and money to the Minority AIDS Project of Los Angeles and Hot in Hollywood.
Prior to joining Agape, Tim was the Minister of Music at Unity Fellowship of Christ Church in Los Angeles for over 12 years
